The Haryana government on Saturday decided to set up Kalpana Chawla Medical University on 100 acres of land donated by the panchayat of Kutail village in Karnal district.
This was announced by chief minister ML Khattar at a meeting held here to review the progress on the construction of Kalpana Chawla Medical College. Various medical colleges, nursing colleges and dental colleges would be affiliated to the university.
Stating that the director of Kalpana Chawla Medical College would present next month a concept paper on the university, which would have all modern and quality medical services, an official release said at least one medical college of 200 seats, a 750-1,000 bed hospital, a dental college and some medical institutes would be set up on the area in coordination with the central government.
The construction work on the university complex, which would have facilities on a par with any other medical institute located in big cities, would be completed in the next four-five years. Besides specialist centres, it would also have paramedical facilities, the release said.
Khattar directed the officials to complete construction work on the Kalpana Chawla Medical College and Hospital in a time-bound manner. So far, a sum of Rs143 crore had been spent on the construction of the college and hospital, which would cost Rs645 crore.
The construction work on the 500-bed hospital would be completed by 2015 and a medical college with 100 seats would be started with the approval of the Medical Council of India by 2016-17 academic year.

After being set up in Kutail, the college would be moved to the university campus while the hospital would be run from the city only. Khattar directed the officials that the road adjoining the Kalpana Chawla Medical College and Hospital should be widened by the public works (building and roads) department to cope with traffic congestion.
At the meeting, Khattar was apprised of the fact that the work on covering the sewer along the college had entered the final phase.
