Karnal district authorities on Monday denied media reports on a suspect case of polio from a local village. Civil surgeon Dr Shiv Kumar said that the one-year-old patient in question was suffering from meningitis, a medical condition with puss in the membrane of the brain.
He clarified that it was a clear case of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) but not of polio. The CMO said that there were more than 15 identified reasons for AFP due to which a patient might develop complications.
Dr Kumar said that the girl patient was investigated at Karnal civil hospital on November 19 and 20 and was suffering from various ailments.
Though she was referred to the PGIMER in Chandigarh for further treatment, her parents left the institute without completing prescribed treatment.
"It is not a case of polio at all as in November our medical team in Karnal had got her examined. Her stool test reports were also found to be negative," he said.
The CMO further said that both legs of the toddler were affected, whereas polio affects only one lower limb.
Later in the evening, deputy commissioner Renu S Phulia told HT that even though it did not appear to be a polio case, the health department had been asked to get her stool tests conducted afresh to clear any doubts.
