Littering in Mohali will soon cost dear

Following HT’s cleanliness campaign, the SAS Nagar municipal corporation (MC) has come up with Sanitation and Public Health Bylaws 2014. The MC has authored stringent bylaws and those who defy them will be fined heavily. Action will also be initiated against them under section 65 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Following HT’s cleanliness campaign, the SAS Nagar municipal corporation (MC) has come up with Sanitation and Public Health Bylaws 2014.

The MC has authored stringent bylaws and those who defy them will be fined heavily. Action will also be initiated against them under section 65 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

These bylaws will become applicable once published in the official gazette.

MC commissioner Uma Shankar Gupta told HT, "Cleanliness is a serious issue, and stringent steps need to be taken to maintain the surroundings. The campaign by HT has once again brought the issue to fore and we have swiftly acted and come up with these bylaws. We are open to criticism and appreciate the newspaper for pointing out the same.”

The civic body has categorised offences as domestic/individual and commercial/industrial units. Penalties will be levied depending on whether they are first, second or third-time offenders. For those who commit offences four times or more, the penalty will be the same as that of a three-time offender.

The MC will also involve residents in implementing these new laws. Gupta said, "We shall also be asking residents to send us pictures of people littering, along with details or complaints about littering in their area. We will then act accordingly."
