Love’s ruling the box office

Last year, when Student Of The Year (SOTY) released, it created a frenzy at the box-office and went on to become one of the highest grossers starring newcomers. This year, too, with Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (YJHD) becoming a blockbuster, it’s safe to say that young romantic comedies are making a comeback in a big way.

Even in the list of upcoming releases in the next year, most of the films belong to the mushy genre.

“Young rom-coms are back in fashion after the phase of south-style action movies. Leading the brigade was Karan Johar's SOTY which has pan-India,” says film exhibitor and distributor Akshaye Rathi.

He adds that Karan’s YJHD was a worthy follow up, which became the first ever rom-com to storm into the R100 crore club. Rathi says, “Now that these movies have shown the business potential of the genre, we can hope to see filmmakers make rom-coms which go beyond the urban viewers and make country-wide audiences pay to enjoy these films.”

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh agrees that rom-coms are here to stay. “At the end of the day, everyone wants a stress-free entertainment. And now, the target is the youth, who actually love these movies,” says Adarsh.
