In a letter, the chief minister told Rajnath that the Punjab Police had failed to make any breakthrough in the case, while requesting the union ministry of home affairs (MHA) to entrust the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

"Since the matter is of very urgent and sensitive nature, so I reiterate my request to you for looking into the case personally and issue necessary orders to entrust the investigation to the CBI for quick dispensation of justice to the aggrieved family," Badal wrote to the union minister.

The state government had earlier urged the MHA to hand over the investigation to the CBI in January.
