Judicial magistrate Pamelpreet Grewal awarded one-year jail to a Ambala resident for rash and negligent driving and leaving a pedestrian injured while crossing a road on zebra crossing. The court has also directed Vinod Kumar, a resident of Ambala (Haryana), to pay a compensation of `30,000 to accident victim Vitsuta Aggarwal.

Dismissing the plea of false implication submitted by the accused, the court said, "The fact that the accused was driving at a speed that he could not stop the car even after the complainant had reached the middle of the zebra crossing outside the college during closing time of the college is itself sufficient to show the rashness and negligence on the part of the accused. The accused was required to take more care and caution while driving on the road that he failed to do."

The UT police in January 2013 had registered a case on the complaint of one Vitsuta who said on November 20, 2012, she was going from her college to Sector 15 bus stop. She said at about 1.30pm when she was walking on the zebra crossing to cross the road to reach Sector 15 bus stop and she was in the middle of the road.

Vinod Kumar's defence counsel had prayed for acquittal, saying that there was a delay of more than a month in filing the complaint. Kumar had denied hitting the victim, saying infact he was the one who had helped the victim after she was hit by some other car by taking her to GMSH-16.
