The seven accused arrested in connection with firing at Mauli Baidwan village on July 5, where six persons suffered injuries, were produced in court and sent to judicial custody on Monday.
The other eight accused are still at large. On July 5, a group belonging to a candidate, who lost the sarpanch elections, allegedly opened fire on supporters of SAD vice-president Kiranbir Singh Kang leaving six people, including a kabaddi player. The group is backed by Akali leader Balwant Singh Ramoowalia.
The incident happened around 7am after Ramoowalia's supporters came to newly-elected sarpanch Kulwinder Kaur's house and allegedly fired 10 rounds from a .12-bore rife and two .32-bore revolvers.
The police have registered a case against 15 people and the same day arrested seven persons in this regard.
On Sunday, the police arrested two more persons namely Sukhwinder Singh and Gurdeep Singh under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 336 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon) and 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object) of the Indian Penal Code.
Former sarpanch of the village, Avatar Singh alleged that Ranjeet Singh alias Roda, who was named in the FIR, was in the village, but the police have not arrested him so far.
