The Punjab Medical Council (PMC) will get tough with the medical practitioners who work hand-in-glove with laboratories and prescribe unnecessary investigations.

In a press release, PMC president Dr GS Grewal on Tuesday said the Medical Council of India (MCI) had asked the state medical councils to get tough with the diagnostic centres providing commission and cuts to the referring doctors and medical practitioners, which led to unnecessary investigations.

According to Dr Grewal, the MCI had issued two separate letters to the state councils asking them that they should take immediate action on such complaints and should investigate these complaints in a time-bound manner. The councils have also been asked to take suo motu action wherever they felt it necessary.

The letters written by the MCI secretary and the deputy secretary maintained that the "MCI had received a complaint with regard to various diagnostic centres giving cuts and commission to doctors for referring patients to diagnostic centres and also prescribing the investigations unnecessarily which are not required".

The letter said they should investigate all complaints received with regard to unethical practices adopted by the registered medical practitioners in the respective state medical councils under the Indian Medical Council Regulations, 2002.

Measures taken
PMC calls people to register complaint if they find any hanky-panky
Public notice has already been issued
If there is need, PMC also to have sting operations
