The butter-milk prices have been hiked the most in absolute terms due to the upcoming summer season, as consumption rises in this season, sources claimed.

Defending the decision, senior MILKFED officials said that the rising input costs had led to the price rise. An official told HT: "Exports have opened up and many private companies are offering high prices to the farmers for their inputs. To maintain our supply chain, we also have to pay more to the farmers, and also on a par with these companies. Our full fat milk is still Rs 2 cheaper than the price in Delhi." They also claimed that the price hike could actually help curb the anticipated shortage in milk supply during summers.

In 2013, the company had increased the price thrice for milk. Prices were raised Rs 1 per litre each in June and September and hiked by Rs 2 per litre in December 2013.
