Under this project, a heat-pump technology has been introduced by Milkfed at its milk plant here, supported by Japan's international cooperation agency.

The key feature of this technology is that it performs simultaneous electrical chilling and heating operations and offers an opportunity to milk and food processing industries to significantly cut down their energy consumption. The installation of the EHP (electric heat pump) at Verka has resulted in 30% energy savings in its application as compared to the base figures and reduction in carbon dioxide emissions.

"Such low carbon technologies will help to make the dairy industry and the food processing industry more energy-efficient and environment-friendly and also help to achieve financial benefits," said Milkfed managing director Alaknanda Dayal.

"EHP is a cross-cutting technology which is new for India. It can be customised for all processing industries where there is simultaneous heating and cooling for processing," said TERI director Girish Sethi.

This workshop was attended by participants from various industries associations of Chandigarh and Mohali; Chamber of Industries, Chandigarh; dairy cooperatives of Punjab and Haryana; national dairy development board; Anand; private dairy and food industries, and the hospitality industry.
