The killer stretches across Chandigarh continue to live up to their names as the UT administration and the Chandigarh traffic police have failed to come out with a strategy to combat accidents.
The killer stretches, such as 2.6-km road connecting the Transport Area traffic light point with the Housing Board light point, sectors 45-46 traffic intersection, Madhya Marg, traffic light points at Hallomajra, Chandigarh airport lights point, Industrial Area Phase 1 and Daria village, though identified as accident-prone spots for more than five years now, still no steps were taken to make them safer for motorists. Travelling on these roads is nothing short of a tryst with death since a large number of trucks ply on these routes. Cyclists and pedestrians often fall victims at these spots, with most mishaps occurring after midnight. Most of them are hit-and-run accidents and the police fail to solve most of them in absence of proper night vision CCTV cameras.
The Chandigarh traffic police claim they study the accident prone areas and send suggestions to the engineering department of the UT administration. On the other hand, the engineering department reacts by completing the paper work and hardly any changes are made at the ground level.

Data reveals that most of the accidents took place in the wee hours as buses and trucks travel at break-neck speed owing to empty roads.
