The Punjab and Haryana high court has directed the Punjab government and the Punjab Nurses Registration Council to file the action-taken report against nursing colleges in the state which had admitted more students than the authorised strength and also do not have proper infrastructure.
The directions came from the division bench comprising acting chief justice Jasbir Singh and justice Rakesh Kumar Jain on Friday on a public interest litigation filed by a non-governmental organisation, Ehsaas Human Rights Protection Group.
The court also said, "Tell us about the total number of such registered nursing institutes in the state."
The petitioner had alleged that in order to earn money, private nursing institutes had been admitting students more than their capacity without having proper buildings and infrastructure. It was informed that such institutes were playing fraud with candidates by charging fee of Rs 1.5-2 lakh, that was much more than the fee prescribed by the government.
It was also submitted that such institutes were producing untrained nurses.
The high court had last year restrained Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot, and nursing colleges affiliated to it from admitting students in excess of the seats allowed by the Punjab Nurses Registration Council. The court had made it clear that if any institute would admit excess students, it would be treated as contempt of court.
