Around 15 family members of a Hisar resident, who had tried to commit suicide outside the office of the Haryana director general of police (DGP) here by consuming sulphas last month, have converted to Islam in protest against the alleged police inaction on his complaint that he had been duped of Rs 27 lakh by a friend.

Sushil Sardana had consumed sulphas tablets on August 31 alleging police inaction against his friend for duping him of Rs 27 lakh. Sushil had alleged that his friend Vivek Makkar, along with his wife Neeta Makkar, fraudulently took Rs 27 lakh from him and did not return the money despite repeated requests. He had lodged a complaint with ACP Hisar, following which a case was registered on August 16. He alleged that the police did not take any action against the couple and investigating office in the case, sub-inspector Satbir Singh, helped the accused after taking bribe.

A case of attempt to suicide under section 309 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against him at Sector 5 police station.
Talking to HT over phone from Hisar, Naresh Khurana, uncle of Sushil, said that the entire family, including Sardana'sparents, brother, sisters and uncles converted to Islam in protest against the police action.

He said that they would consider converting back to Hinduism if the police takes action against the three accused.
