The court of additional district and sessions judge Amit Sharma on Wednesday sentenced a head constable posted with Panchkula police, to seven years rigorous imprisonment (RI) for raping his second wife.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on Jaspal Singh, who had not told the victim about his first marriage.

The woman, aged around 25 years, had filed a complaint with the police in February last year and an FIR in this case was registered the next month.

The woman told the police that she came in contact with Singh during a police recruitment test in 2004.

The two married at a Gurdwara in Sector 32 after courtship, but according to the woman, Singh all along kept her in the dark about his first marriage.

The woman has alleged that Singh committed intercourse with her without her consent and after marrying her in an unlawful manner.

"The clinching evidence in the case was the statement of the victim. She was being abused for 7 years by fraud," said Manoj Vashisht, public prosecutor.
