A part of the General Hospital, Sector 6, has improved significantly over the years. It looks clean and bright, though a major reason could be that it functions from a new building, while the old and rusted undergoes renovation. It handles 3,000 out-patients a with 300 indoor patients.
“Things were in bad shape when I took over. Previously, the toilets could not be used. When I joined we ordered 100 taps for toilets but no one was convinced that the situation will ever improve. And true to form, in a few days all the taps were stolen,” says principal medical officer Dr Usha Gupta
“After installing the equipment again, we put CCTV cameras in corridors and the mugs in the toilets were chained. After cleaning the toilets, a sanitation worker has to sign a check-list every time. I check all these every month and ensure that there is discipline,” says Dr Gupta.
A number of dustbins are stationed across the hospital and help maintain the standards.
Sanitation workers on contract
The hospital has the sanitation workers on contract. For every 250 sq m, the hospital has one worker. It has around 35 workers at its disposal. The hospital management keeps a check on the issue of sanitation material to sanitation workers. This is done through Gupta’s office. Around three years ago, cupboards and furniture, including condemned ones, used to lie unattended.

{{/usCountry}}“We have numbered all cupboards, fans, lights, furniture and even curtains. Regarding the condemned items, we are disposing of them soon,” said Dr Gupta. Work has also been done to improve the streetlighting and the roads in the vicinity.
