Prof Grover became the PU’s vice-chancellor on July 23, 2012, and was set to retire in July this year. During his tenure, the university ranked first in the Times Higher Education list of world universities.

Confirming the development, PU registrar Col GS Chadha (retd) said that they had received the official communication in this regard.

“We are moving in the right direction and a lot needs to be done to take this prestigious university to a new high,” Prof Grover told HT, soon after he was informed of the extension order.

Faculty members of the university have welcomed the decision with the Panjab University Teachers Association (PUTA) president, Prof Rajat Sandhir saying Professor Grover took the university to new heights. “We all are confident that he will continue to deliver,” he said.

Prof Grover’s previous tenure has remained devoid of controversies and he was seen not interfering in the syndicate and the senate politics.

An alumnus of Panjab University, he did his MSc (honours) from the Physics department in 1973 and went on to attain a doctorate from Tata Institute of fundamental Research (TIFR) in 1979.

Having published about 200 research papers and with a patent to his credit, it was during Prof Grover’s tenure that the Chandigarh Region Innovation and Knowledge Cluster (CRIKC) was set up to identify and carry out collaborative research projects.

The vice-chancellor is particularly praised for appointing more than a 100 teachers in the varsity to meet the dearth of faculty members.
