Patient dies after PM's security stops him; PMO orders probe

A kidney patient died in Chandigarh on Tuesday after the security officials of the Prime Minister allegedly stopped him at the hospital and did not let him enter. PMO has ordered probe into the incident, sources said.

A kidney patient died in Chandigarh on Tuesday after the security officials of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh allegedly stopped him at a hospital.

The PM attended two fuctions at the hospital, sources said. PMO has ordered probe into the incident, sources said.

A report from the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) said that the man, 32 years old, from Ambala was being rushed for urgent treatment for kidney failure.

Manmohan Singh arrived in Chandigarh to attend two convocations and police were on high alert since morning with traffic snarls expected in the city during his day-long visit.

He will also attend a special convocation at his alma mater, Panjab University, Tuesday afternoon where he will be honoured with a Doctor of Laws degree.

This is his first visit to PU, where he was a postgraduate student and later joined as a faculty member.

Tight security measures were in place across Chandigarh in view of the prime minister's visit. The routes that he will take during the day were manned by armed police and traffic personnel.

Traffic was halted on roads taken by the prime minister from the airport to the PGIMER.
