Sunita Sharma, a health worker with Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) received National Florence Nightingale award 2014 at a function in Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi on Monday. President Paranab Mukherjee conferred the award on her.
Sharma has been working in an urban resettlement colony in the Urban Health and Training Centre (UHTC) under the PGIMER's school of public health community medicine department, for the past 18 years.
The colony mainly comprises migrant workers from various states across the country.
“She developed an excellent rapport with the community and people identify her as one of their family member. People of different age groups and gender, approach her for issues related to their health and receive immediate medical help from her,” a PGIMER spokesman said, adding that although she had been given a separate survey area in the colony, she surveyed other areas on her own to provide medical aid, much to the amazement of her seniors.
“She maintains an excellent coordination with other health workers of UHTC and also with the workers of departments, including the Integrated Child Development Scheme, sanitation and NGOs as well as schools,” the spokesman.
Sharma also assisted the composite Targeted Intervention project, which identifies high risk behaviour of people for treatment. She has also volunteered in polio immunization projects.
“She is also known for her quality reports. She would regularly motivate beneficiaries for procedure such as vasectomy and tubectomy and also aid people in registration of births and deaths,” the spokesman said.
