PoK refugees demand permanent settlement

Demanding a comprehensive settlement, a large number of displaced families from various districts held a protest demonstration against the state government under the banner of Jammu and Kashmir PoK Refugee Front outside the Jammu Press Club here on Saturday.

Demanding a comprehensive settlement, a large number of displaced families from various districts held a protest demonstration against the state government under the banner of Jammu and Kashmir PoK Refugee Front outside the Jammu Press Club here on Saturday.

The families belonging to Mirpur, Bhimber, Deva, Watala Chhamb, Mannawar, Kotli, Palandari, Baag, Poonch and Muzafarabad assembled outside the press club from where they tried to take out a rally but were arrested by police.

Front general secretary Rachhpal Singh Chib said the PoK refugees of 1947, 1965, 1971 had staged many protest rallies, hunger strikes, and dharnas, courted arrest and submitted memorandum to the prime minister, home minister, chief minister as well.

He further said ultimately the state Congress committee highlighted their plight and demands with the Prime Minister and other senior leaders at New Delhi.

He added that as per media reports, union ministry of home affairs had asked the state government to send proposals and all details of POK refugee families for additional assistance.

The front demanded that a fresh notification should be issued to register genuine non-camp families with the DC office that had been left out.

It appealed to the authorities to take appropriate steps to ensure that the problems of the refugee were solved soon once for all.
