The district police on Sunday afternoon nabbed the prime suspect involved in the case of attempted robbery at State Bank of India (SBI) automated teller machine (ATM) here, which took place on June 11 midnight. The accused has been identified as Rajender Singh, 25, native of Saidpur village in Punjab's Amritsar district. A police team led by sub-inspector Surender Kumar nabbed the accused from his house. Kangra additional superintendent of police (ASP) Shiv Kumar said that the police stumbled upon vital clues while investigating the case.
“Working on the clues and footages obtained from the CCTV camera installed in the ATM, we identified the accused. He was arrested from his house on Sunday,” Kumar said, adding that the police was now trying to find out if the accused was involved in other ATM robbery cases too, that took place in the district.
Earlier on May 11 burglars had looted `22.5 lakh from two ATMs (Punjab National Bank and Kangra Central Cooperative Bank) of the district and a gang of had also looted `19.45 lakh from a PNB ATM at Indora in Nurpur subdivision of the district on February 22.
Meanwhile, Kumar told that the police was yet to arrest the two accomplice of the accused who were involved in the Dharamsala ATM robbery attempt.
“Teams have been sent to the neighbouring states to nab the culprits,” said Kumar, adding that the accused might also be involved in similar crime cases that took place in other districts of the state. “We have asked the police in the neighbouring districts to check the records of ATM thefts,” Kumar said.
