The Punjab government has initiated a programme to install rooftop photovoltaic solar systems in 120 police stations across the state for power generation.
Bikram Singh Majithia, non-conventional energy minister, said on Friday that Punjab Energy Development Authority (PEDA) would soon embark on the programme for installation in order to increase usage and popularise solar photovoltaic technology for power generation.
He said each solar photovoltaic system would generate 2.5-KW power for powering lighting and running computers in each police station, adding that the total cost of the project was Rs 6.6 crore.
Reiterating the state government's resolve to install solar power systems on all government buildings by the end of 2017, Majithia said the power generated through these systems would replace conventional energy and also provide backup power during grid shutdowns.
He said PEDA was already promoting the installation of rooftop photovoltaic power plants in which capital subsidy was being provided as per guidelines of the union ministry of new and renewable energy. He said these projects would also reduce generation cost, which was in the range of Rs 6-7/kilowatt hour, in the long run.
Majithia said PEDA had also carried out a detailed rooftop survey of major government buildings in the state, adding that the estimated potential was 40 MW.
