Taking note of HT’s report ‘Official with fake degree promoted to top post’, published on May 20, the director general, Sports Authority of India, Injeti Srinivas, has ordered an inquiry to investigate the authenticity of SAI official Dinesh Chandra Tiwari’s degree at the earliest.
“It’s a serous issue, needs investigation… if required SC Sharma, director, coordination, can go to Bhopal to get his (Tiwari’s) personal file,” Srinivas said in the official noting.
Tiwari, who was recently promoted to assistant director and is posted at the National Institute of Sports, Patiala, is a 1988 commerce graduate from Varanaseya Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya in Jagatpuri (Delhi).
It was during a routine departmental exercise that his degree from the university (fake as per the University Grants Commission’s list) was highlighted by SAI-appointed advocate Mayank Yadav while giving legal opinion on the officer’s file.
Another fact highlighted by Yadav, which raised questions on the validity of the degree, was that Tiwari had sought permission in September 1988 to appear for B.Com exams in 1988-89, but is shown to have qualified in 1988 in the degree.
“It is not possible for a person to appear for exams one year late and get the degree a year in advance,” Yadav had observed.
