Girl students of the Government National College who are demanding improvement in the functioning of the college management and a new building, were allegedly beaten up by police during a protest here on Thursday. Some students were injured when police resorted to lathicharge near the deputy commissioner's residence to disperse the protesting girls.
The girl students, led by AISF activists, gathered in huge numbers near the deputy commissioner's residence at Barnala Road and raised slogans against the administration for not making efforts to redress their grievances.
Later, DC Anshaj Singh came out from his house and talked to the protesters. But he did not succeed in convincing them.
Meanwhile, police allegedly used force to disperse protesters and resorted to lathi-charge.
Later, students from national college, Chaudhary Devi Lal University and others colleges boycotted classes and protested against police brutality. Students demanded action against deputy commissioner Anshaj Singh who allegedly ordered lathicharge and asked him to apologise to students.
Students alleged that national college principal Suman Gulab was not ready to listen to the problems of girls.
INLD leader and Ellenabad MLA Abhay Chautala has condemned the police action. Chautala said after forming government in the state, they will construct a new college building for girl students on priority.

{{/usCountry}}City SHO Suresh Pal denied that students were lathicharged. He, however, said the girl students were protesting peacefully but some outsiders created trouble. "They misbehaved with the deputy commissioner. When police tried to catch them they ran away. Later, police arrested one of them. Roshan Suchan, a student leader, has arrested and further action will be taken against him," he added.
