In order to increase the employability of its students, Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh is considering a compulsory non-credit course in the University.
The course was discussed on Monday at a meeting of the chairpersons, directors, coordinators and campus deans under the chairmanship of vice-chancellor (V-C) Arun Kumar Grover at the senate hall.
According to a proposal made by PU central placement cell, 10-15 lectures will be held in each semester of the final year to deal with personality development, business English, quantitative aptitude and logical reasoning, among other things.
According to the proposal, lectures of the summer semester would comprise development soft and communication skills, time management, presentation skills, group discussions, facing interviews and career opportunities.
“The university is likely to make clearing of at least one non-credit course floated by the cell compulsory,” a PU spokesperson said. The proposal states that a student will have to attend at least 75% of sessions, which would be conducted by central placement cell in association with the industry, in the final semester.
In the winter semester, sessions to help students choose a career, efficiency enhancement, self development, decision- making skills, as well as inculcating a positive attitude, a good value-system, professionalism, networking and non verbal communication, among others, would be taken.

While PU’s accreditation lapsed in January 2014, it did not initiate the process of renewal on time as is, as a result, yet to get fresh NAAC ratings.
The university has already submitted its letter of intent to the council and has to complete the second stage of the process, in which it must submit details such as faculty strength and achievements of the university in the past three years, within the next six months.
