The Panjab University has directed all its departments and braches to undertake cleanliness drives on and around their premises.
The decision, taken in an attempt to intensify its cleanliness campaign on the campus on Wednesday, was taken at a recent meeting chaired by PU registrar Col GS Chadha (retd). PU has undertaken the drive as part of the Swacch Bharat Abhiyan.
Departments have been directed to weed out unwanted and unused articles and to ensure general cleanliness on their premises. PU has already identified areas that require urgent cleaning.
PU's NCC and NSS Units as well as social workers and the horticulture wing will conduct a 20-day drive starting from November 14. PU has directed its departments to ensure students as well as shopkeepers having business establishments on the campus participate in the drive. PU has decided to enlist NGOs for the drive.
Additionally, the NCC and NSS units will also conduct outreach programmes to create awareness of the Clean India campaign. Various competitions and walkathons would also be organised as part of the drive.
PU has decided to make a bulk order for dustbins. Colour-coded bins would be placed at the Students' Centre, markets and hostels, while each department will have at least one dustbin, placed in an area that can be easily accessed.
The varsity has also directed the environment studies department and the energy resource centre to initiate projects on various aspects of segregation and recycling of waste materials.

{{/usCountry}}In addition, PU will undertake a project to beautify the campus. The varsity's security wing has been asked to make efforts to educate street vendors and commercial establishments about the correct methods to dispose of garbage. PU has also decided to undertake a drive to discourage the use of plastic bags and is even mulling the purchase of e-rickshaws for garbage disposal.
