Panjab University (PU) has proposed a fee hike of 5% with the maximum limit capped at Rs 1,500 for all courses, including self-financed ones for the next academic session.
A committee formed by the vice-chancellor to finalise fee structure of the university teaching departments and regional centres for the session 2015-16 took the decision.
The proposal would come into effect only after it gets approval from the syndicate and the senate.
Dean student welfare (DSW) Navdeep Goyal said there would be very nominal fee hike in regular courses while in self-financed courses too, the hike in fee would not be more than Rs 1,500.
He added that with the hike in the fee, the varsity would generate additional funds of around `60 lakh and this would be spent on the welfare of students.
Panjab University Campus Students Council (PUSC) president Divyanshu Bhudiraja, who is a member of the committee, objected to the decision.
“The proposed fee hike is totally unjustified. It will put additional financial burden on the students, especially those enrolled in self-financed courses,” said Bhudiraja.
The last revision of fee was done in May earlier this year after six years. There had been protests against the decision. However, the varsity authorities had stood firm and the proposal was implemented.

Dean University Instructions (DUI) AK Bhandari, registrar Colonel GS Chadha (retd), dean college development council (DCDC) Profes-sor Naval Kishore and Panjab University Teachers’ Association (PUTA) president Rajat Sandhir also attended the meeting.
