The Punjab government on Tuesday constituted a committee under the chairmanship of the financial commissioner, development, Suresh Kumar to coordinate efforts in development and the adoption of techniques and technologies to reduce post-harvest losses of crops and encourage value addition both at the farm and industrial levels.
Rice and wheat are the major crops of Punjab and the area under their cultivation is about 2.65 million hectares. Stating this here on Tuesday, an official spokesman for the Punjab government said the committee would consider and review post-harvest techniques and technologies developed by the Central Institute of Post Harvest Engineering and Technology (CIPHET) for adoption and commercial application.
It will also integrate techniques and technologies of management of post-harvest losses and value addition development by the CIPHET, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) and Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), to ensure the transfer of these technologies to farmers and industries for their commercial application in post-harvest management of crops and value addition to formulate, implement and manage the skill development programme in post-harvest management technologies.
The vice-chancellors of PAU and GADVASU, the CIPHET director, joint director of the Union agriculture department, managing director of the food processing industries corporation, and the joint director of the Punjab agriculture department would also be members of this committee.
