The Punjab government informed the Punjab and Haryana high court on Friday that it had proposed, in its acid-attack victims' policy, to bear 100% expenses of medical treatment and to give Rs 5 lakh compensation to families in case of the victim's death.
Principal secretary, home department, DS Bains, filed an affidavit on the upcoming policy in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by the Poor Patients Relief Society for seeking free treatment, compensation and rehabilitation of acid-attack victims.
Haryana, which has a similar relief pattern for acid-attack victims, also filed an affidavit disclosing that apart from other features, the government's policy includes a clause that "victims of acid attack would be given preference for allotment of shops as per the Haryana Public Distribution System (Licensing and Controlling) Order". But as the petitioner was raising the demand for making horizontal reservation of jobs for acid-attack victims and monthly compensation of Rs 5,000, Haryana's advocate general was asked to appear in the court on the next hearing.
Adjourning the case for February 7, the bench comprising chief justice Sanjay Krishan Kaul and justice AG Masih commented that the Punjab government and the Chandigarh administration shall follow the Haryana module, which gives Rs 5 lakh compensation in case of death of the acid-attack victim and bearing of 100% medical expenses of the victim.
