As many as 70 accomplished folk singers, musicians and dancers brought alive the magnificence of the rich folk musical traditions of the Punjabi region in a thrilling performance at the Randhawa auditorium at Punjab Kala Bhawan, Sector 16, here on Sunday.
The programme titled as ‘folk songs and dances of Punjab’ was organised by Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) under its ‘Horizon series’ in association with the Punjab Arts Council, which was staged by artistes of Harinder and Party for ‘The Rising Star Disabled Youth Club’.
The musical bonanza commenced with a popular folk dance Luddi by 10 young boys with a song ‘Luddi paewan waleya ve..’ before a duet performance of ‘Dhola’ based on folk lyrics captivated the Punjabi art lovers.
Mostly middleaged dancers numbering 14 and led by Preetam Rupal brought alive the verve and vitality of Malwai Gidhha with crispy folk lyrics like ‘Patlo na dar ni Moga glaan joga’.
While the ‘Jhoomar’ dance by 10 boys was an enactment of theme song; the rarely performed ‘Dandaas’ dance reflected the regional folk style of areas now in Pakistan sung by Mehar Chand.
A dozen young glamorous girls presented ‘Jago’ with ‘bolyian’ in their ‘Gidha’ much to the delight of modern city audience, while a boisterous Bhangra provided finale to the musical bonanza.
