A faction of Panjab University Students Union (PUSU) at University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) has joined the National Students Union of India (NSUI) on Tuesday.

However, denying the report, PUSU leaders said no one had joined NSUI, and the rumours were being spread to mislead the students. “Our student members were misled to join NSUI, but none of them had joined,” said Sumit Goklaney, a PUSU leader, adding these were all rumours.

In the past few months, many top students' leaders from both the leading parties - PUSU and Students Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU) - joined NSUI. This shift may have major impact on the results of students' council elections to be held around September, the preparations for which have already been started by different parties.

With many top leaders from various parties joining NSUI, it is understood that they will add muscle to the party to quiet an extent. NSUI which was not even considered for alliance by other strong parties seems to have strong chances of winning elections without any alliance this year.

Speaking to HT president of PU students' council Sattinder Satti, who has joined NSUI, said: “NSUI is a national-level party that will provide a platform in politics. I consider myself to be lucky to be a part of this body, where we strive for student equality.”

Moreover, those who are not a student of the university, but have joined NSUI want the party to win the elections this year, as they feel that their future within the party at national-level depend on this election.
