The steady downpour also led to a sharp drop in temperatures, with the maximum recorded at 27.6°C, 5°C below normal.

According to the director of the regional meteorological department, Surinder Pal, more rainfall is expected during the next 24 hours. “Overall, the city is likely to get moderate rainfall in patches till the second week of September, after which the monsoon will begin receding and is expected to come to an end by the third week,” he said. On Friday, it began raining early in the morning with a cool breeze flowing and by 5:30 pm the city had received 13.7 mm of rainfall, with the figure going up to 38.9 mm by 8.30 pm.

However, the rainfall also threw life out of gear, especially in the evening, with the city witnessing long traffic jams on Madhya Marg and in the southern sectors.
