Region's report card: 80% pass

Even though the pass percentage of Central Board of Secondary Education exam for Class XII improved marginally as compared to last year, as many as 23,910 students in the region could not clear the exams this year.

Even though the pass percentage of Central Board of Secondary Education exam for Class XII improved marginally as compared to last year, as many as 23,910 students in the region could not clear the exams this year.

"The overall pass percentage in the region is 80%. Last year, the pass percentage was 79.92%," said RJ Khanderao, regional officer, Panchkula. These figures do not include those appearing in improvement exams or the candidates appearing in private.

A total of 1,19,761candidates appeared in the Class XII from the region, comprising Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh, this year.

As per data provided by regional office of Panchkula, a total of 77,778 boys appeared in the exam, but only 53,779 could pass. The pass percentage among boys dropped to 69.14%, whereas last year it was 75.80%. There were 53,777 girls from the region who sat in the exam this year, but only 44,336 could clear it. The pass percentage among girls dipped to 82.44%, whereas last year it was 85.72%.

Only Central Tibetan School Administration scored a higher percentage from last year. This year it has pass percentage of 92.67%, whereas last year it was 86.75%.

Govt schools better than private ones
This year, the performance of government schools dipped to 79.86%. Last year, it was 81.68%. However, they performed better than the private schools. In 2012, the private schools scored a pass percentage of 79.17%, which is 0.69% lower than the government schools. Last year, the pass percentage of private schools was 79.78%.
