Rights group protest against ‘illegal’ arrest of student leaders

Students and various democratic and human rights groups organised a protest at Plaza, Sector 17, on Monday against the alleged illegal arrest of two student leaders by Andhra wing of National Investigation Agency (NIA).

In a press release issued by Lokayat, a city based discussion forum and People's Union for Civil Rights, Haryana, it alleged that two student leaders including Mandeep Singh, a president of Jagrook Chhatar Morcha, Haryana, and Pradeep Singh, a student of Punjab Engineering College and a leader of Students for Society (SFS) were picked up on gunpoint by the Andhra Police wing of NIA from Sector 23-24 light point on March 9.

They claimed that both students remained in illegal custody of the police for a week, where they remained a subject of mental torture. And later Mandeep Singh was booked in a false case under Section 8 of Andhra Public Security Act in Mancherial police station of Adilabad district of Andhra Pradesh.

He was presented before the Tehsildar and Pradeep Singh was handed over to his friends at Bhopal Railway Station on March 18. Mandeep Singh is still in a jail in Adilabad. The student leader Pradeep Singh also shared his story with the gathering.

Father of Mandeep Singh also addressed the protest. Various democratic rights activists including advocate Rajiv Godara, Anand Prakash also addressed the gathering. Advocate Rajwinder Singh Bains from Punjab Human Rights Organisation, SP Singh from Democratic Forum, Inder Singh from AIDSO, Beant Singh from PSU, Raminder Singh from SFS, Sanjeev Singh Mintu from Krantikari Pindu Majdoor Union also addressed the gathering.

The activists said that the way they were arrested from Chandigarh is beyond the jurisdiction of NIA. They also said that what the Andhra Police was doing was unconstitutional. The protestors demanded immediate release of Mandeep Singh.
