Police investigations into the affairs of a shelter home in Rohtak, run by one Jaswanti and raided by a team of National Commission of Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) after allegations of sexual abuse of some inmates, are throwing up more murky details with each passing day, with police now coming across "evidence on sale of six more male babies and abandonment of 10 girl inmates" by the accused.
Sources in the police department told Hindustan Times that from the statements of children housed in the shelter home, police came to know that about six male infants were "sold" by Jaswanti without following due legal process of adoption.
Further, the children allegedly told police that around 10-12 girls were either missing or had been abandoned by Jaswanti with the help of other co-accused.
Rohtak SP Vivek Sharma said that police teams had been dispatched to various cities like Jind and New Delhi to recover the six male babies allegedly given away by Jaswanti. Asked if these babies had been sold, he maintained that police were yet to confirm the allegations.
DSP Dharna Yadav said that police were trying to verify the statements of children as well as Jaswanti to get to the bottom of the whole affair.
Surprisingly, examination of five girls suspected to have been sexually abused at the shelter home has not been conducted even after three days of request made by local health department due to alleged lax and apathetic attitude of PGIMS authorities here.
Asked about the medical examination of five girl inmates, Yadav confirmed that the PGIMS have not conducted tests till now and added that a request has been made to PGIMS director to appoint a medical board for the tests immediately since they formed an important aspect of police investigations.
They (PGIMS) should have conducted the tests on the very first day but they had failed to do so, she remarked.
Meanwhile, a police team sent to Aligarh to recover a male baby last week, is yet to find out the family that 'bought' the newborn of one Fatima for Rs 61,000. Another team sent to Delhi to recover another infant has however found the family which agreed to give blood samples of the baby for DNA test, whenever needed.
Sources further revealed that more persons, including a few officials, could be arrested by police in the coming days.
Jaswanti's brother Jaswant Narwal and shelter home counsellor Veena have been remanded in police custody till May 18 for further investigation. Police had demanded 10-day remand of Veena, but a local court sent her in police custody for four days only.
