Following the alleged assault on Rashid Khan, 28, and his wife Sitara, 20, the police have booked five Uttar Pradesh residents, all of whom are the relatives of Sitara. While three of the accused have been arrested, two are at large.

Rashid and Sitara, who hail from Alamgirpur village in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, got married against the wishes of their parents and came to Chandigarh a week ago. On Monday, the relatives of the couple came to Burail to persuade them to part ways and return home.

Talks between the two sides continued throughout the day and, following a disagreement, a heated argument took place. Soon after, the verbal spat ensued in a scuffle and Sitara's brother started thrashing Rashid. It has been alleged that Rashid was dragged out of the house by the father and brothers of Sitara, who was also not spared by them. Rashid's father Mohabbat Ali, who tried to intervene, was also beaten up by the girl's relatives.

Sitara has also alleged that her five family members had thrashed, threatened and also made attempts to kill her in Burail on Sunday. Officials of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, here said that all the three patients were brought to the hospital by the police on Sunday night. Their condition is stable.

Rashid Ali and Mohabbat Ali, however, have left the hospital against permission from doctors, police said. Sitara is still in the hospital.
