SAD ready for MC polls, says Punjab education minister Cheema

Punjab education minister Daljit Singh Cheema distributed cheques amounting to Rs 2.5 crore for development works in various villages and towns of the Rupnagar assembly constituency during a function held at local market committee office on Thursday.

Addressing the function, Cheema said the Punjab government was committed for the development of the state.

He added that construction of the Rupnagar bypass at a cost of `80 crore would be completed soon. Besides, he also sanctioned grant for the construction of a bridge over a small rivulet on the Bindrak-Purkhali road.
Talking to the mediapersons, he said Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) was ready for the municipal council and municipal corporations elections likely to be held in February.

Cheema added. "The education department has requested the State Election Commission to postpone the elections keeping in view the school examinations in February. However, it was up to the Election Commission to take a decision in this regard."

He said the SAD and the BJP would contest the MC elections jointly.

Rupnagar municipal council president Paramjit Singh Makkar, panchayat samiti chairman Narinder Singh Mavi, Market Committee chairman Manjit Singh Ghanauli, SAD leader Mohan Singh Dumewal and Darshan Singh also spoke on the occasion.
