Mismanagement of parking lots in Sector 17 is leading to their underutilisation. In a survey conducted by architect and nominated councillor Surinder Bahga in Sector 17, it has come to the fore that 5,400 square metre of parking space was unused in the sector, which is enough to accommodate 170 cars.
As per administration’s own estimate, the sector needs parking space for 15,400 cars, whereas the space available can accommodate only 6,400 four-wheelers.
There are 22 parking lots, including underground lots, in Sector 17, but they are poorly managed and declared full to capacity even before they actually should have been due to haphazard parking of vehicles. The findings of the survey have been submitted to the MC, which will be put forth in the coming House meeting.
As per the survey, at least 5,500 four-wheelers and 4,600 two-wheelers come to different areas of Sector 17.
As per the Chandigarh’s own by-laws, parking space for one car is needed per 25 square metre of covered area. The inner circle of Sector 17 has approx 3.85 lakh square metre of covered area. If we go by Chandigarh’s own by-laws, Sector 17 needs parking space for 15,400 four-wheelers.
Sector 17 has six taxi stands — one each in 17 A, B and D; and three in 17-E — with capacity to accommodate at least 40 cars each. If these taxi stands are shifted to somewhere else, additional space to accommodate 240 four-wheelers can be created.

The tall claims of the civic body of maintaining two underground parking lots appear to have fallen flat as the facility opposite the office of medical officer, health, is in a shambles. Garbage dots the area, with puddles of water in every corner. The two-level lot can accommodate 700 two-wheelers and 100 four-wheelers. However, HT team found one of the levels locked.
