Remember watching Jhalak Dikhla Jaa (JDJ) on TV and lusting over Madhuri Dixit’s jewellery?
For all those who have been waiting to get their hands on those alluring things of beauty, some of her classy picks, by jewellery designer Roopa Vohra, would be available in Chandigarh from tomorrow.
Talking about designing for Madhuri, Vohra says, “Madhuri wore my jewellery — earrings, neck pieces and bangles — for four episodes of JDJ. These pieces became so famous that people started approaching me saying ‘Jhalak wali collection dikhana’. Before I could decide on a name for my new collection, people christened it as Jhalak collection.”
Sharing her take on the jewellery, Vohra says, “The basis of my theme remains the same — revival of the art form of Thewa. The USP of my collection is that the stones and diamonds are carved by hand, not like the laser-cut diamonds being offered in the market today.”
“In the race of coming up with ‘new and innovative’ designs, ancient jewellery has lost its importance. Jewellery, as a gift, is a symbol of love and gratitude. I believe jewellery should be designed in a way that my granddaughter too can wear it. A good piece of jewellery is one which does not lose charm with time,” adds she.
Doing her bit for the society, Roopa Vohra has been organising fashion shows for the victims of breast cancer, a part of the earnings of which are donated to Tata Memorial. For a majority of these shows, which are held in Mumbai mostly, Vohra gets A-list celebrities to walk the ramp for her.

{{/usCountry}}Talking about celebrities, Vohra adds that actor Raveena Tandon is also one of her loyal clients.
“She is fond of my new collection of Chand Baalis, which she wore to Shah Rukh Khan’s party recently. These Chand Baalis are a part of my Jhalak collection.”
Another highlight of the collection, being displayed at Hotel Taj, Sector 17, would be pieces worn by Madhuri Dixit (at JDJ), Gul Panag, Chitrangada Singh, Jacqueline Fernandez, Mandira Bedi and Konkona Sen.
Vohra’s Jhalak collection is being exhibited at Hotel Taj, Sector 17, Chandigarh on September 13 and 14.
