Heavy rush was witnessed in different parts of tricity on Dhanteras as shoppers thronged markets to buy utensils, gold ornaments and Ganesh and Lakshmi idols.

Shops selling utensils registered a huge profit while jewellers' shops were packed to the capacity with people purchasing gold ornaments and coins. Similar was the scene at shops selling Ganesh and Lakshmi idols as people purchased idols for Lakshmi Puja. "Though people prefer conventional idols, those of brass and copper are also available at reasonable rates," said Shayam Rathore, a shopkeeper.

According to an old belief, buying gold and silver is considered auspicious on Dhanteras. Several jewellery houses offer attractive discount to attract customers. Some even give exchange offers as well as discount on old jewellery.

"Buying gold and silver is considered auspicious, so I am purchasing some silver and gold coins. Owing to discounts and other offers provided by shopkeepers, people can now afford to buy these precious metals," said Anupama Dixit, a housewife.

Apart from jewellery, people were also seen buying utensils and home appliances like microwave, washing machine or refrigerator. Many were seen picking up dinner sets, which make a popular gift item on Dhanteras. Pinky Ahuja, a bank employee, said, "I got a microwave for my home on Dhanteras and a dinner set for my sister-in-law. Dhanteras is considered very auspicious as it is said that Laxmi, the Goddess of wealth, showers her blessings on this day."
