The state mourned the death of historian and Padama Bhushan awardee, Bipan Chandra, who passed away at his residence in Gurgaon on Saturday. Chandra was born in 1928 at Pragpur village of Kangra district.

Expressing grief over the demise of Chandra, Gautam Sharma Vyathit, a local writer, credited the historian for promoting the Himachali literature during his stint as chairman of National Book Trust (NBT).

“He took keen interest to promote Himachali literature during his stint as NBT chairman,” Vyathith said.

Vyathith remembered Chandra as a humble personality, soft spoken and very kind-hearted person. “It's a great loss to the country and particularly Himachal Pradesh,” Vyathith said.

Sushil Kumar Phull, another local writer said: “I got one of my books 'Laal Mitti Ki Karamat' published from NBT when Chandra was its chairman.” He said Chandra encouraged Himachali writers and even formed a society to promote Pahari language.

Meanwhile, chief minister Virbhadra Singh and governor Urmila Singh also expressed grief over demise of Chandra.
