In a House meeting on Tuesday, the municipal corporation decided to provide job to the widow of Harpreet Singh Sodhi (33), a resident of Sector 45, who died in an accident caused due to stray cattle.
Rising above party lines, all councillors unanimously agreed to provide job to the widow, Gurpreet Kaur (31). They also decided to meet UT administrator Shivraj Patil at a later stage to demand permanent job for her. The agenda in this regard was placed both by the Congress and BJP councillors.
Meanwhile, Congress councillors also asked Harpreet's family to take back the daily diary report (DDR) lodged against the MC commissioner and mayor.
It will be the first case that a family member of a stray cattle victim will get a job on compassionate grounds in the MC.
On April 6, Harpreet Singh Sodhi was killed in a road accident after his motorcycle rammed into stray cattle near light points of Sector 46/49 in the wee hours while he was returning from his shop at Jagatpura with his eight-year-old son.
Meanwhile, the councillors also decided to give their one-month honorarium of Rs 5,000 each to the victim's family. Union railway minister Pawan Kumar Bansal has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh. BJP councillors Rajesh Gupta and Desh Raj had announced Rs 25,000 each, while nominated councillor Sat Paul Bansal had announced Rs 50,000 for Harpreet's family, which means the latter will get around Rs 5.25 lakh.

Congress councillor Pardeep Chhabra, while taking up the issue said, as per the MC act, the commissioner can appoint any person for six months on contractual basis under any circumstances. “Till the time nothing is finalised regarding the government job, the victim's wife can be provided contractual job as per the terms and conditions of the MC act,” he said.
Meanwhile, MC commissioner Vivek Pratap Singh said they will recommend the case strongly to the UT administration for providing government job and Rs 10 lakh compensation to the victim's wife. “For the time being, we will be providing her job on contract basis,” he said.
