Strict security arrangements have been made to ensure free, fair and peaceful zila parishad and block samiti elections to be held on Sunday.

Disclosing this here on Saturday, deputy commissioner Tejinderpal Singh Sidhu said all officials had been directed to perform their duty to the best of their capability and had been warned against indulging in any unfair practice.

At the same time, Sidhu appealed to the people to maintain law and order.

He said 444 polling booths were set up in the district. As many as 2,627 officials would be on duty and 665 officials were kept reserved for emergency. Besides this, 50 supervisors would be on duty who would be in constant touch with presiding officers.

Sidhu said 119 polling booths were set up in Majri panchayat samiti, while 144 each in Dera Bassi and Kharar.

“There are 31 sensitive stations at Majri, while 43 sensitive and 30 super sensitive polling stations at Dera Bassi and 18 sensitive and seven super sensitive at Kharar,” he added.

The voting will take place from 8 am to 4 pm and the counting will take place on May 21.

Meanwhile, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said strict action would be taken against anyone found guilty of disturbing the election process.
