Union minister for information and broadcasting Manish Tewari here on Wednesday took on the SADBJP government by accusing it of suppressing the freedom of press.

“The ruling Akali-BJP regime has used all means to suppress freedom of press, which exposes their misdeeds and criticises the government. They (the SAD-BJP government) have a monopoly over the state’s cable network,” he said while speaking at a meetthe-press programme of the SAS Nagar Press Club.
“The Akali government in Punjab has used all undemocratic means to curb the freedom of press. The most alarming of all the wrong happenings in the state is the attack on the freedom of press,” he said.
He said the Badals owned a cable network in the state and only allowed those channels that spread their propaganda to operate. He claimed that channel which spoke against the state government’s policies were blacked out.
He said that during the Lok Sabha elections, people of Punjab would eradicate their “lawless” rule.
Asked about the Narinder Modi-Rahul Gandhi competition, he said Gandhi comes from a family that had scarified its own for the country’s freedom, while Modi was involved in a massacre.

On the welfare of journalists, Tiwari said, “We will soon be adopting a system of giving facilities to journalists in the entire country.”
