Having lost their daughter to negligence in treatment at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here, parents of 16-year-old Anupama Sarkar have moved National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, New Delhi, with an appeal to enhance penalty against the premier medical institute.
Anupama died at the PGIMER in July 2012.
Advocate Pankaj Chandgothia, who filed the appeal on behalf of Anupama's parents said, "The appeal seeking enhancement of compensation would come up for hearing on May 3."
Chandgothia further said the appeal for enhancement of compensation had been filed only against the PGIMER and not the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU).
Pleading for higher compensation against PGIMER, Chandgothia said, "The State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Chandigarh, has erred in assessing and awarding compensation on a very lower side against the PGIMER and on consolidated and lump-sum basis. The compensation should have been assessed separately under various admissible heads, especially towards death of only child in her youth, pecuniary damages and special damages."
He submitted that the state commission had omitted the grant of special damages.
In the appeal, Chandgothia pleaded, "Anupama was the only daughter of her parents. She was a bright student who had just cleared her Class 10 with over 70% marks and had a promising future ahead. But her life and prospects were cut short on the account of negligence of the PGIMER."
