Updated with technology, but lack basic amenities

Over 22,000 households in all slums of the city may not have rudimental amenities such as clean drinking water and toilet, but have luxuries like mobile phone, television and computer, according to recent census data on slums.

Over 22,000 households in all slums of the city may not have rudimental amenities such as clean drinking water and toilet, but have luxuries like mobile phone, television and computer, according to recent census data on slums.

Out of total 22,080 households, 10,648 are availing banking services while television seems to be one of the top priorities as 10,880 households have one television set each. The figures show that 13,496 have mobile phones while 1,189 possess two-wheelers. Also, 209 slum households have cars. A total of 126 households are using internet services.

In contrary, mere 4% households have the facility of latrine within the premises, while the remaining are using public latrine. Census also disclosed that 22% of the households are in a dilapidated condition, while 20% have untreated source of drinking water.

The data also shows that 79% use kerosene as fuel for cooking, while 12% use firewood. Just over 6% use LPG for the purpose of cooking.

The data also reveals that more than 88% slum households used electricity for lighting, while the rest used alternative means such as kerosene.

According to official figures, Colony Number 5 has maximum population living in a total of 7,035 houses followed by Colony Number 4 with 5,185 houses.
