UT home secretary Anil Kumar on Monday released a book 'Incompatible blood type kidney transplant' here and said that with the advancement of science, they had come to a phase wherein even the incompatible kidneys were working wonders.
Authored by Dr Priyadarshi Ranjan, transplant surgeon at Fortis Hospital, SAS Nagar, the book release function also had Col Harinder Singh Chehal, regional director (North), Fortis Healthcare.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Rajan said need of this book was to quell fears in the mind of people who did not get compatible kidneys for transplant operations.
He said the book was the first in the country that elucidated how kidney transplant was possible even when donor and recipient had different blood groups.
Having trained in incompatible kidney transplant program from Johns Hopkins, Dr Ranjan said: "Doctors across globe and also now in India have started transplanting kidneys in compatible blood groups. People need to be aware of these developments so that their miseries on dialysis can end by getting a kidney transplant."
He said provisions of the Human Organ Transplant Act (HOTA) of India were very strict and they only allowed close or blood relatives to donate a kidney to their loved ones. He said since several families in today's date were nuclear, not many donors were available. "We come across various patients every day whose family members are ready to donate kidneys, but since their blood groups do not match, they cannot get the transplant done," dr Rajan added.
