The decision was taken following the directions from UT administrator Shivraj Patil, who has stressed upon protection of these choes.

The draft Master Plan 2031 of city has also laid emphasis on protection of these choes. The Master Plan made certain recommendations, which include ban on construction, mining and dumping of sewage and solid waste in choes; if 300 metres land is available along the choe, it should be earmarked as eco-sensitive zone; sewage treatment plant for villages alongside the choes; and need to ask state governments of Punjab and Haryana to adopt same measures for protection of choes.

The Sukhna Choe flows north to south and joins the Ghaggar river. Recently, Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal had written to Patil for his intervention in taking effective steps to prevent flow of industrial effluents and domestic waste into drains which were the polluting Ghaggar river.

Patiala Ki Rao flows northeast to southwest. The N-Choe flows through the Leisure Valley into SAS Nagar.
