With diploma holders from technical institutes in the city struggling to get jobs, the UT administration is now working on a method to maintain a database of such students in order to send them out to companies and residents.
The UT administration currently does not have records of all diplomates of four of its technical institutes — Central Polytechnic (CPC), Government Polytechnic for Women (GPW), Industrial Training Institute (ITI) and Government Central Crafts Institute for Women (GCCIW). This makes it difficult for the institutes to keep a record of the number of students who have already secured jobs.
Taking serious note of unemployment among institutes’ graduates at a meeting with officials of the UT directorate of technical education, UT adviser Vijay Dev has directed the department to keep a record of diploma holders from the institutes to enable both companies as well as residents to approach them with job opportunities.
“There should be holistic approach adopted towards these students in terms of employability. The institutes should keep a record of students and their skill sets,” he said.
Sources said directions comes after it was found that while students with special training in plumbing, masonry and welding, among others, remain unemployed, unskilled people with no knowledge of the risks involved are given these jobs.

The four technical training institutes in the city- Central Polytechnic (CPC), Government Polytechnic for Women (GPW), Industrial Training Institute (ITI) and Government Central Crafts Institute for Women (GCCIW)-offer training in 21 trades. These are carpentry, electrician, plumbing, fitting, welding, instrument mechanics, machinist (composite), machinist-grinder, tool and die making, turning, electronics mechanic , mechanics(refrigeration and air conditioning), draughtsman (civil and mechanical), computer operator and programming assistance, stenographer (English and Hindi), cutting and sewing, data entry operation, information technology and electronics system maintenance (ITESM) and automobile (COE).The institutes admit 376 students every year.
