Villagers placed the body of the 3-year-old girl, killed after being run over by her school van outside her house, on Wednesday, on the road and blocked the Panchkula-Yamunanagar highway. The protesters, including the family, were demanding action against the school authorities. The jam lasted for two hours.
Charanjit, the father of the victim Nitasha, alleged that her daughter was killed due to negligence on the school’s part and action was warranted.
“In spite of our requests, the police is yet to take any action in the case,” he said. Sandeep Kaur, the victim’s mother, also sat on the protest.
Laxman, another protester claimed, “We had requested the police to register a case against Durga Public School as they did not provide any conductor or attendant with the van. The school’s name was not displayed on the van and there were other violations. However, some police officials went and took tea with the school principal, forcing us to protest.”
Chandimandir SHO inspector Arvind Kumar and ACP traffic Jagtaar Singh reached the spot and tried to pacify the protestors, but the jam was lifted only after the police assured of strict action against the culprits.
“We will add Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) to the charge-sheet as the school authorities violated the high court directions. Legal opinion is being sought,” said Panchkula DCP Ashwin Shenvi. The driver is yet to be arrested.
