Punjab Congress legislator from Gidderbaha Amrinder Singh Raja Warring will take charge as 17th president of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) in New Delhi on January 5.

In a press statement issued here on Saturday, Amrinder thanked Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi for giving him the responsibility and assured the party leadership and the youth of the country that he would come up to their expectations. He said his goal would be to strengthen the organisation to make it respond to the new challenges.

Dharnas cancelled

Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa on Saturday said here that the party would not stage dharnas in Fatehgarh Sahib and Muktsar on January 5.

Bajwa said the programme in Fatehgarh Sahib had been dropped in the wake of the passing away of Baba Ajit Singh Hansaliwale, and in Muktsar cancelled since the party workers would be in Delhi to attend the ceremony where Warring would be inducted formally as IYC president.

These dharnas are being staged to ask for the dismissal of the Akali-BJP government in the state in the wake of the alleged involvement of its ministers in the drug racket.
